A Genome-Based Screening Platform for Biostimulants

Utrecht University and Aarhus University are seeking an entrepreneurial CEO to launch and lead a high-potential AgTech spin-off. The venture is built around a patented, genome-based microbial screening platform that eliminates predictability issues in the booming biological crop market.

01 — Problem
description

The biological crop stimulant market is growing rapidly, but commercial product design heavily relies on outdated taxonomic selection (microbial "family names"). Because of immense genetic variation within the same species, this approach is highly unreliable. It causes a loss of up to 25% in functional potential and poor root colonization in open fields—leading to high failure rates during expensive field trials and unpredictable product performance for farmers.

02 — The
technology

This spin-off opportunity is built on a breakthrough, patented genome-based screening platform that solves performance unpredictability. Instead of selecting microbes by identity, it screens them in silico for the exact genetic blueprints required for definitive root colonization. The Technology: Screens for a strict index of 266 universal colonization genes (KEGG Orthologs). By engineering microbial consortia to cover >50% of these core entries, the platform guarantees a stable root population for at least 14 days post-inoculation. The Business Case: Validated across high-value crops (maize, wheat, rice, potatoes), this technology allows industry players to screen vast libraries digitally before moving to fields, drastically shortening R&D pipelines. The Opportunity: IP is secured by Utrecht University and Aarhus University. We are looking for a CEO to take the helm, finalize the spin-off creation, secure seed funding, and drive early commercial partnerships.

03 — The
current team
The technology was jointly developed by leading scientists from Utrecht University and Aarhus University. The scientists will remain closely involved as advisors.
04 — We are
looking for…
A strong track record or background in AgTech, biotech, or microbial biologicals.
Experience in early-stage business development, venture creation, or raising venture capital (seed/Series A).
The entrepreneurial drive to transform university IP into a market-disrupting company.
